It is common to conclude that public relations increased in popularity worldwide after the United States of America’s collapse in 19th and 20th centuries. Many scholars agree that the 1897 Yearbook of Railway Literature was the first time the term ‘Public Relations” was used. Harry Reichenbach (1882-1931), a prominent American publicist who was based in New York and promoted motion pictures, is one of these renowned publicists. Reichenbach was familiar with the famous Chabas painting. He recognized the famous painting by Paul Chabas and saw it in a Chicago window. He negotiated with the owner of the shop, who had not sold any of his 2,000 prints. Reichenbach had hired a few young men who were captivated by the image to show it to Anthony Comstock, a moralist crusader. Comstock was stunned to see it. Comstock was shocked to see it. Despite this, the case attracted public attention to the artwork, which was eventually sold in millions. Edward Bernays is another name worth noting in the realm of public relations. Edward Bernays was the first university professor in public relations. Ivy Better Lee invented the concept of public relations. Bernays stated that Public Relations was born out of the belief that propaganda could be used to achieve harmony. The Germans were using propaganda, making it a negative word. Ivy Lee is often credited with the development of cutting-edge news release (also called ‘Press Release’). His consistent thinking style was known as the “two-way approach” to public relations. This involves listening to clients and helping them to communicate messages. Lee focused his efforts on propaganda to promote the interests of consumers. They were all well-known businessmen with great influence and wealth. The communication they used and their businesses practiced was, however, sometimes called “Public damned” as it demonstrated their inability to engage with the public. Another school of thought believes Bernays is the first toorist in the profession. Bernays drew a lot of his ideas from Sigmund Freud’s observations about the irrational and insensitive motives that lead to human behavior. His uncle’s experience was to be used to gain public opinion. His motives may have been noble, but history was there to demonstrate what would happen if these theories were used for evil purposes (using Hitler as a case study, and World War II). Bernays was the author of several books including Crystallizing Public Opinion (1923), Propaganda (228), Consent Engineering (1947). Public relations was his idea of ‘applied science’ that makes use of sociological and psychological experiences. Bernays first customers were the tobacco industry. In 1929, Bernays organized an amazing publicity stunt. It was meant to persuade female smokers to try cigarette smoking. It was inappropriate for women and was unfeminine. There were no female participants, other than occasional prostitutes. What is PR (Public Relations) now? Public relations was reported to be one of the fastest-growing professions in the globe. Overview of Social Media/Online Public Relations has seen a significant increase in its use. This has allowed public relations to be viewed in a new way. Technological advances and social networking are a new area. These technologies allow for the creation or modification of highly interactive networks. The network can be created using mobile and web-based tools. Social media is any type of electronic communication, including websites for microblogging and social networking. Users create online communities to exchange information, ideas, or other content such videos (merriamwebster). Statistics/Effects There is a growing audience for social media, and this number is expected to increase. A Pew Research Center report found that 65 percent of Americans use social networking sites. This is an increase from the 7 percent who started monitoring social media usage in 2005. Online media has become a powerful tool in reaching certain demographics and age groups. There are many tools that can be used by PR to influence public opinion, increase sales, profits, and increase visibility and credibility of an organization. These tools can be used in a variety of ways and can have positive or negative effects depending on how they are applied.

Facebook provides social utility features that enable people to interact and connect more effectively with their families, friends and coworkers. It was launched in February 2004 and has connected more than one billion people.

LinkedIn is a social network service that works via mobile apps and websites. It focuses on jobs and business. It was launched on May 5, 2003 and founded on December 28, 2002.

Twitter is a social network that has the highest influence globally. Users can follow anyone with an account, which makes it a popular social network. It also allows users to connect to celebrities who often post on Twitter. Twitter allows users to quickly exchange information in microblogs with 140 characters per tweet.

YouTube gives users the ability to upload videos online. YouTube is used worldwide by over one billion people. This has made information sharing easier.

Blogs can be used as a forum or information sharing tool. People can subscribe and comment on different topics. Bloggers not only create content for their blogs, but they also build social relationships with other bloggers and their followers.

There are many other platforms available that can be used to share your story. In conclusion, communication is rapidly changing. Information can be accessed quickly these days which has lead to information overload. As such, PR must adapt to changing times. PR isn’t based on communication theories. The history of PR has contributed significantly to the development and improvement of PR theory. Public relations do not stay static. They constantly adapt and change to meet new circumstances. The theory of excellence, which advocates the use of the Symmetrical communication technique for both internal and exterior communication, is currently the dominant paradigm in PR. This allows organisations to have a meaningful and transparent dialogue with their stakeholders. However, this also means that they need to be open to the possibility of changing policies. Social media is another example of trust. It allows for a two-way relationship and it validates that trust. High-quality PR is the key to success for companies. Although the PR process appears to be feasible for most companies, it can also hire different PR models depending upon the case. Public relations have evolved over the years. Communications can be described as a range of methods, including traditional advertising techniques such as banners, print advertisements, hearingsay, spectacles and banners. The internet/online media has given rise to modernized communications. Public is more in tune with the internet than ever before and has a constant stream of information. This is why PR must be able stay current with new trends in order to be an effective communicator with both the public and businesses. New media are a great way to communicate information to citizens in the modern world. Information technology is at the heart of mass communication. This has been made possible by the new media.
